A trial allows you and your clinical team to assess how the MPK performs in real-world situations, while considering safety, comfort and your individual mobility needs. This helps ensure the right knee is selected to best support your goals and lifestyle.

Your Prosthetist will be able to discuss whether an MPK trial is right for you, arrange your appointment(s) and support you throughout the trial process.

At the start of your trial, your Prosthetist will assess your current prosthesis, take the necessary measurements and prepare your trial prosthesis. A series of assessments, known as ‘outcome measures’, will be completed to understand your current mobility and goals. These help your Prosthetist evaluate the benefits of the MPK trial and will be repeated at the end of the trial to measure your progress.

Your MPK will then be carefully aligned and adjusted to support your posture, balance and comfort. The MPK will be configured wirelessly using the Prosthetist’s setup app, allowing the settings to be tailored specifically to you and the way you move.

The amount of training and support you need will depend on your individual requirements. Your Prosthetist and rehabilitation team will guide you through the features of your MPK, helping you build confidence and get the most from your prosthesis. Physiotherapy can be especially beneficial, supporting you as you practise everyday movements, navigate slopes and stairs, and adapt to different environments.

During your trial, you will begin by training with your Physiotherapist to help you understand the features of the MPK and build confidence using it. Once you feel comfortable and your clinical team is happy that you are ready, you are able to take the MPK home and experience how it supports you in your everyday life.

During this time, it can be helpful to reflect on how you feel when carrying out different activities and consider questions such as:

• Can you walk further?

• Do you have more energy after walking or at the end of the day?

• Have you noticed fewer aches and pains?

It is also important to keep track of any changes in your balance, including whether you experience more or fewer stumbles or falls during your trial. Sharing this feedback with your clinical team will help them understand how the MPK is supporting you. Your experience and feedback are an essential part of the trial process.

The duration of your trial will depend on your individual needs and goals. Some trials may take place during a single clinic session, while others may involve a longer evaluation period of 2–4 weeks. This gives you and your Prosthetist the opportunity to assess how the MPK performs in your everyday life and whether it is the right choice for you.

No. A trial simply gives you the opportunity to experience an MPK for a period of time and understand how it may support your everyday mobility. Following the trial, you and your Prosthetist will review your experience together and decide whether it is the right solution for you.

Whether your current prosthesis can be adapted will depend on your existing setup. Your Prosthetist will assess the alignment, component compatibility and overall condition of your prosthesis to ensure it is safe, comfortable and suitable for an MPK.
